Plage de Peno is a semi-open beach in Carqueiranne measuring 250 metres long and 20 metres wide, with high visitor frequency. The beach is the easternmost of Carqueiranne's beaches and is divided into three smaller sections by three dikes. It is surrounded by an urbanised zone connected to the wastewater network, with a restaurant and sailing school nearby.

Water

Semi-open bathing water body. Beach dimensions: 250 metres long and 20 metres wide. Catchment area: 0.10 km². South-east orientation. Water renewal is acceptable.

Location

Located in the commune of Carqueiranne, Plage de Peno is the easternmost beach of Carqueiranne. A restaurant and sailing school are situated near the beach. Port des Salettes is located to the north of the beach.

Facilities

A point de prélèvement (sampling point) for DDASS monitoring is present at the site.

Season

15 June to 15 September. Active monitoring programme applies throughout the summer season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent based on DDASS sampling conducted between 2020 and 2024. Potential pollution sources include Port des Salettes, the Salettes pump station, storm water overflows, and the wastewater network. Site vulnerability index classified as Occasional. Overall site sensitivity level is Low. Potential pollution is expected to be short-term, affecting water quality for no more than 72 hours, with easily identifiable origins.

Risks

Potential pollution from Port des Salettes due to contaminated water intake from the coastal river Le Grand Vallat (medium risk). Risk of wastewater network overflow and discharge onto the beach (low risk). Risk of pump station overflow during dry periods due to malfunction, and during rainfall due to excessive parasitic water inflow with possible pump station overcharging and manual spillway valve actuation (low risk). Low potential for cyanobacteria, macroalgae, or phytoplankton proliferation with no historical algal bloom incidents.
