Calipso is an urban beach in Pulpí, Almería, located on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The beach stretches 340 meters in length with an average width of 20 meters and features golden sand composition. It is situated in a protected area (Natura 2000 site) and experiences calm bathing conditions with moderate wave exposure dominated by easterly and north-easterly winds.

Water

Mediterranean coastal waters, non-influenced by river inputs. Deep sandy substrate with gravel and rocks. Micromareal range of 0–2 metres. Easterly to east-north-easterly current regime dominates. Moderately exposed to waves, primarily from the east and north-east.

Location

Pulpí, Almería, Andalucía, Spain. The beach is easily accessible on foot and by car. A sports port is located 10 kilometres away at Águilas. Footbridges and disabled access routes are available.

Facilities

Red Cross lifeguard post, rescue equipment, surveillance equipment, warning signage, showers, bins, cleaning service, disabled access, footbridges, signage present. No beach promenade. No water sports rental, nautical club, or scuba diving zone.

1 June to 30 September

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for all monitored seasons 2013–2016. Low risk of short-term microbiological contamination (24-hour duration). Point source pollution identified as the S. Juan de Terreros wastewater treatment plant (165,265 m³/year). Diffuse pollution sources include land use changes and constructed/altered surfaces in the influence zone. Risk assessment methodology follows UNE 150008 standard.

Risks

Low risk of jellyfish proliferation. Low risk of phytoplankton proliferation. Low risk of macroalgae proliferation.
