Castillo de Baños is a natural Mediterranean coastal bathing water located in Granada, Andalucía. The beach extends for 1,860 metres with an average width of 12 metres and features dark sand mixed with gravel and boulders. It experiences calm bathing conditions with moderate wave exposure and low occupancy levels. The beach is semiurban in character with a promenade and wooden walkways providing pedestrian and vehicle access.

Water

Mediterranean coastal waters with deep water bathymetry. Substrate consists of mud and sand. Micromareal tidal range of 0–2 metres. Currents predominantly flow east, east-southeast, and east-northeast. Wave regime is dominated by easterly and east-northeast winds associated with levante wind. Annual precipitation ranges from 400–600 mm with a torrent intensity index of 75–100%.

Location

Located in Polopos municipality, Granada province, Andalucía. The beach is easily accessible on foot or by car. A sports port is located at Adra.

Facilities

Showers, waste bins, cleaning service, wooden walkways, and promenade. No lifeguards, no rescue equipment, no disabled access, no signage, no red cross station, no water sports rentals, and no nautical club.

1 June to 30 September

Water Quality

Water quality classification was excellent for all monitoring seasons from 2013 to 2016. The bathing water is classified as coastal Mediterranean waters influenced by Atlantic waters. Short-duration microbiological contamination risk is low, determined using UNE 150008 methodology.

Risks

Diffuse pollution sources from agricultural land use in the influence zone. Point source pollution from urban discharge (Castillo de Baños GR180) and watercourses including Rambla del Trigo, Cautor, and Rambla. Low risk of jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae proliferation.
