Platja de les Muscleres is a narrow, rocky-bordered beach in the municipality of L'Escala in Girona, Catalonia, part of the famous Empúries archaeological site. The beach is 638 metres long with an average width of 30 metres, featuring medium sand sediment and a very steep water entry. It experiences high summer occupancy and lies on the Mediterranean coast facing east.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body type: rocky coastal area with moderate continental influence. Average salinity 33.2–38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.5°C, July 22.8°C, August 22.7°C, September 21.4°C. Predominant sea state: calm. Wave height (significant): 0.61 m with average period of 5.82 seconds, most frequent direction north. The beach receives no natural surface water inflow. Hydrological response velocity index: low.

Location

L'Escala, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located between Platja del Moll Grec to the north and a rocky area to the south. Municipal population: 9,829.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays and minimum three environmental inspections per week.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly during the bathing season according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE criteria. Microbiological control measures Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring evaluates water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons and jellyfish presence. The beach belongs to water mass C9 (L'Escala: deep rocky type with moderate continental influence). Wastewater from L'Escala is treated at a biological treatment facility (EDAR) with nitrogen removal and discharged via a submarine outfall.

Risks

Phytoplankton blooms are monitored continuously throughout the bathing season as a natural phenomenon that can occur frequently in summer. Toxic algae species are monitored with specific management and public warning protocols in place.
