Playa de Poniente is an urban beach in Águilas located on the Mediterranean coast. The beach is 1100 meters long with an average width of 40 meters and features a dark sand bottom with gravel composition. It has a medium occupancy level and serves approximately 22,880 bathers at maximum capacity. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag distinction.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent during 2000–2009 and in 2010–2011. No significant pollution pressure identified in the surrounding area. No authorized discharges in the proximate area.

Risks

Toxic phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that rarely affects public health; low cell densities were recorded in sampling campaigns conducted in 2009. Jellyfish appear seasonally with peak abundance from early spring to late summer. Very low or low risk level for toxic algal episodes.
