Sant Miquel Beach is located in Barcelona's highly urbanized waterfront area, characterized by a medium-grain sandy beach with an average width of 48 meters and a length of 420 meters. The beach has a steep water entry gradient and is adjacent to two major ports—the Olympic Port and Barcelona Port—as well as the Gas breakwater. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Coastal Mediterranean waters, classified as sandy shallow type with low continental influence. Surface area: 20,160 square meters. Significant wave height: 0.74 meters. Mean wave period: 6 seconds. Average salinity: 36.5–38.5 psu. Water temperatures: June 21.0°C, July 23.8°C, August 24.0°C, September 23.4°C. Prevailing winds from the south (weak). General sea state: calm.

Location

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Located within the city's urban coastal zone, bordered by Barceloneta Beach to the northeast at Almirall Cervera Street and Sant Sebastià Beach to the southwest at Plaça del Mar. The beach is situated near the Olympic Port and Barcelona Port.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored biweekly from June to September under the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) surveillance program in compliance with Directive 2006/7/CE. Classification categories include Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing), Sufficient, and Insufficient (unsuitable for bathing). Quality is assessed through analysis of fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Complementary controls are conducted if point-source contamination is detected.

Risks

During heavy rainfall events, combined sewer discharges from the Gas breakwater system (located northeast at Sant Sebastià Beach) can affect water quality at Sant Miquel Beach. The beach does not receive direct water inputs but may be impacted by these emergency overflow discharges.
