Sant Sebastià is a sandy beach located in Barcelona's highly urban environment, measuring 660 meters long with an average width of 55 meters. The beach is situated in the Barcelonès district near two major ports—the Olympic Port and Barcelona Port—and the Gas breakwater. It has high summer occupancy and is characterized by medium-grain sand with a very steep entry into the water.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach is part of water body C20 (Barcelona sandy shallow water body with low continental influence). Mean salinity ranges from 36.5 to 38.5 psu. Average water temperatures: June 21.0°C, July 23.8°C, August 24.0°C, September 23.4°C. Prevailing wind direction is south with weak intensity. Predominant sea state is calm. Mean wave height 0.74 m with 6-second period and SSW direction. Continental influence level is low.

Location

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in the city center, bounded by the Olympic Port and Barcelona Port. It connects to Sant Miquel beach to the northeast at Plaça del Mar and to Barcelona Port to the southwest.

June to September.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly from June to September according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring analyzes microbiological quality using Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci as fecal contamination indicators. Classification results are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing) and Poor (unsuitable for bathing) on a temporary basis, with annual classifications based on four years of analytical data.

Risks

The beach does not receive direct water inflow. However, stormwater discharges from the Gas breakwater (located between Barceloneta and Somorrostro beaches, northeast of Sant Sebastià) can affect water quality during heavy rainfall. The Besòs wastewater treatment system has four emergency discharge points at different breakwaters (Gas, Bogatell, Bac de Roda, and Prim) where combined stormwater and wastewater are discharged during torrential rainfall events.
