Saturraran Beach is a rustic, medium-sized sandy and rocky beach located in the external part of the Artibai estuary in Mutriku, Gipuzkoa, Spain. It measures 300 meters in length with an average width of 90 meters and a total area of 27,000 square meters. The beach is partially enclosed by cliffs and an artificial structure, and experiences moderate to strong waves with a tidal range of 4.5 meters. It is a highly frequented beach with comprehensive facilities and serves multiple recreational uses including swimming, windsurfing, canoeing, diving, and fishing.

Water

Part of the Artibai estuary transition water body. The beach is 300 meters long with an average width of 90 meters and surface area of 27,000 square meters. Water renewal time is seven days or less. Tidal amplitude is 4.5 meters with a minimum tide of 1 meter. The Artibai River has an average inter-annual flow of 2.5 cubic meters per second, with a maximum depth in the estuary of 10 meters at mean tide.

Location

Located in the municipality of Mutriku, Gipuzkoa, Spain, between the Mijoa creek and Saturraran point. The beach is accessible by stairs and has a parking area. A public telephone and cafeteria/restaurant are available nearby.

Facilities

Public services include changing rooms, showers, toilets, and washbasins. Sand amenities include showers and fountains. Waste bins and containers are provided. Lifeguards, surveillance towers, first aid kits, lifeboats, and ambulance services are available. Medical equipment is accessible by telephone. Children's ID bracelets are provided. Designated swimming and prohibited swimming areas are marked. Picnic areas, public telephone, and cafeteria/restaurant are present.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2008-2010 was INSUFFICIENT according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring measured Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations at sampling point PM1 (coordinates 547877, 4796891), located in the central area of the beach. Pollution sources include the Mijoa creek (containing discharges from fishing processing industries) and residential buildings discharging directly into the Saturraran creek without sewage treatment.

Risks

Swimming is prohibited near rocks on the right side of the beach. The beach is exposed to moderate wave energy and coastal currents. Domestic animals are prohibited during the swimming season.
