Cala del Bancal de Arena is a bathing cove located in Santa Pola, Alicante, in the Valencian Community. The cove has an irregular, open configuration without coastal defense structures or rigid promenade. It is bordered to the north and south by natural beach zones. The beach comprises sand, extends 753 meters at high water, has an average width of 32 meters, and experiences low tidal range. Water currents flow from south to north.

Water Quality

Water quality classification results are available for monitoring seasons 2020–2023. The beach underwent monitoring setup in 2021. Weekly inspections during the bathing season assess visual parameters including water analysis, water appearance, and sand cleanliness, classified as excellent, good, sufficient, or insufficient. No direct coastal discharges affecting water quality exist. The wastewater treatment facility (EDAR Santa Pola) serves 44,394 inhabitants with a design capacity of 24,000 m³/day and treats wastewater to tertiary level with ultraviolet treatment; the treated effluent is diverted to agricultural reuse.

Risks

Rainfall frequency is low with mild impact due to absence of geographical features such as ravines or watercourses that could transport runoff to the coast. Urban sewage risk frequency is low with mild impact as no submarine outfalls or pumping systems affecting the beach exist. Coastal discharges frequency is low with mild impact. Rivers and canals: low frequency, mild impact. Industrial facilities: low frequency, mild impact. Port facilities: low frequency, mild impact. Diffuse pollution: low frequency, mild impact. Cyanobacteria proliferation is not a typical phenomenon in coastal waters and no episodes have been detected in the Valencian Community. Phytoplankton blooms may occur naturally in low-renewal zones but no specific occurrences are documented for this location. Jellyfish blooms are natural phenomena potentially associated with coastal geomorphology, climatic conditions, and high water temperatures, occurring more frequently in low-renewal zones.
