Playa de Calas del Este is a marine bathing zone located in Santa Pola municipality, Alicante province, in the Valencian Community, Spain. The beach has an irregular closed configuration with perpendicular groyne defence structures and a rigid maritime promenade. It is bounded to the north by Calas de l'Aljub and to the south by Playa del Varador. The beach has a high water quality classification and benefits from weekly monitoring during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on 2020–2023 monitoring). Weekly inspections conducted during bathing season evaluate water analysis, water appearance, and sand cleanliness on a scale of Excellent, Good, Sufficient, and Insufficient. No direct discharge points to the coastline affect water quality. Short-duration contamination factors (rainfall, urban sewerage, coastal discharge) are present at low frequency with mild impact. Environmental monitoring is conducted by the Generalitat Valenciana through phytoplankton and macroalgae surveillance networks.

Risks

Low-frequency potential contamination risk from rainfall, urban sewerage, rivers/canals, industrial installations, port facilities, and diffuse pollution, all with mild impact. Phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that may occur in areas with low water renewal. Jellyfish proliferation may occur due to coastal geomorphology, climatic conditions, and high water temperatures.
