Playa del Río is a natural sandy beach located in Pilar de la Horadada, Alicante, in the Valencian Community of Spain. The beach has a longitudinal open configuration with a maritime promenade and is bordered to the north by Playa de Mil Palmeras and to the south by the Calas de Rocamar. It measures 196.93 metres along the high water line with an average width of 28.57 metres. The beach is classified as having good water quality and is designated as a bathing zone during the official swimming season.

Location

Pilar de la Horadada, Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain. Parking and beach access are available. The beach is accessible to people with disabilities.

Lifeguards and rescue services available. Toilets provided through chiringuito establishments (free access). Foot showers and rinse facilities. Waste bins including selective waste collection. Beach buoys for delimitation. Bar and beach services available. Equipment rental (loungers, umbrellas, kiosk). No accessible facilities service point.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Buena (Good) based on 2020-2023 monitoring data at the centre beach sampling point. The water body belongs to the Segura River Basin District. Weekly inspections during bathing season assess visual inspection parameters, sand cleanliness, and facility maintenance. Urban sewage treatment is provided by EDAR Pilar de la Horadada (capacity 18500 m³/day, serving 25289 residents) with tertiary treatment plus ultraviolet disinfection. Río Sec natural watercourse discharges continuously with high risk classification.

Risks

Río Sec river discharges continuously at the northern end with high-risk classification. Short-duration contamination risks identified as: rainfall (low frequency, mild impact), urban sewerage (low frequency, mild impact), coastal discharges (low frequency, mild impact). Other potential risks: rivers/channels, industrial installations, port facilities, and diffuse pollution all rated low frequency with mild impact.
