Playa El Castillico is a natural sandy beach in San Javier located in La Manga del Mar Menor. The beach is 450 metres long with an average width of 30 metres and dark sand composition. It is an urban beach with high occupancy and daily recreational use, accommodating approximately 6,435 swimmers at maximum capacity. Water quality was rated as excellent during 2000–2011, and the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag distinction.

Water

Coastal maritime zone within the Segura hydrographic demarcation, part of the Mar Menor water body. The beach has a water renewal rate of less than 7 days and experiences microtidal conditions with tidal amplitude less than 2 metres.

Location

San Javier, La Manga del Mar Menor. The beach is located at UTM coordinates 694289.6 (X) and 4187486.57 (Y), latitude 37.812270°, longitude -0.794080°, in UTM zone 30 N.

Foot showers (6), toilets (3), children's playground, promenade present.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified as excellent during the period 2000–2009 and in 2010–2011. The water body is part of the 'El Mar Menor' coastal water mass with acceptable ecological status. No significant pressure from pollution sources was identified.

Risks

Toxic phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that rarely affects public health or ecosystems; sampling in 2008–2009 showed negligible presence of potentially toxic cells. Risk level: null or very low. Jellyfish appear seasonally with peak abundance between early spring and late summer, with variable production. Short-duration episodes are unlikely.
