El Palo is a natural Mediterranean bathing beach located in Málaga, Andalucía. The beach is 1145 metres long with an average width of 25 metres and features dark sand composition. It experiences moderately exposed wave conditions dominated by easterly and east-southeasterly winds associated with levante winds. The beach is highly occupied and fully urbanised with a seafront promenade.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water influenced by Atlantic waters. Water body code: 61C0010 (Puerto de Málaga - Rincón de la Victoria). Bathymetry features shallow waters with muddy-sand substrate. Tidal range is microtidal (0-2 m). Current regime is dominated toward the northeast. Annual precipitation is 600-800 mm with a torrent index of 25-50%.

Location

Málaga, Andalucía, Spain. The beach is situated in the Litoral de Málaga area. Access is available on foot or by car. Disabled access is provided.

Facilities

Red Cross lifeguard post, rescue equipment, vigilance equipment, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, signage, danger warning signage, disabled access, and promenade with walkways. Nautical activities rental available. No toilet facilities.

Water Quality

Water quality classification was Excellent for all monitoring seasons (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016). Short-duration microbiological contamination risk is low. Risk assessment methodology is deterministic (UNE 150008 standard). Diffuse pollution sources include land uses in the influence zone and constructed/altered surfaces. No specific point sources are recorded.
