Gran Playa is a bathing beach located in Santa Pola, Alicante, in the Valencian Community. The beach has a closed longitudinal configuration with no defence structures or seafront promenade. It extends 1057.1 metres along the high-water line with an average width of 78.5 metres and is composed of sand of artificial origin. The beach is situated on a low-accumulation coast with a north-south current and micromareal tide range.

Water Quality

Water quality classification system based on weekly inspections during bathing season. Monitoring results from 2020–2023 available for sampling point Avenida Obispo Bascurana. Quality classifications assigned as excellent, good, sufficient, or insufficient. One direct discharge point identified: Canal Drenaje Avenida Virgen del Pilar (mixed-origin drainage channel) located at the southern limit with continuous flow and medium risk classification. Wastewater treatment plant EDAR Santa Pola serves the municipality with design flow 24000 cubic metres per day and 2020 actual flow 8401 cubic metres per day, treating wastewater for 44394 residents with 98% suspended solids, 99% BOD5, and 94% COD removal efficiency via tertiary treatment plus ultraviolet disinfection.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risk factors evaluated as low frequency and slight impact: rainfall, urban wastewater, and coastal discharge. Long-duration contamination risk factors evaluated as low frequency and slight impact: rivers/channels, industrial installations, port installations, and diffuse pollution. No cyanobacterial proliferation has been detected on the Valencian coast. Phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that can occur in bathing zones with low water renewal.
