The Poste de secours central bathing zone is located in the municipality of Valras-Plage along the Mediterranean coast. The beach is situated approximately 750 metres west of the mouth of the Orb river. The bathing area is in a semi-open environment with breakwaters that limit water currents, which affects how pollutants disperse. The beach is officially monitored according to European Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/CE requirements. Based on simulation of water quality over four recent bathing seasons, this bathing zone is classified as Type 1 profile, indicating that proven pollution risk is not evident.

Mediterranean Sea bathing beach. The bathing zone is located in a semi-open coastal environment. Three zones of hydrographic influence are defined: a distant zone covering a basin of 28 km² and 8 km of the Orb river from its mouth; a proximate zone extending 1–5 km from the bathing area including the full municipality of Valras-Plage and the port of Sérignan to the north; and an immediate zone extending 0–1 km directly around the bathing area.

Location

Season

Official monitoring season not specified. Classification methodology under Directive 2006/7/CE entered into application for the first time during the 2013 bathing season.

Water Quality

The bathing zone is classified as Type 1 profile according to the methodology of the Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/CE. Simulation based on sanitarycontrol results from four recent bathing seasons indicates water quality of 'sufficient', 'good', or 'excellent'. Proven risk of water contamination is not evident. The objective is for all bathing waters to achieve at least 'sufficient' quality classification by 2015.

Risks

The configuration of the Poste de secours central beach in a semi-open environment confers significant vulnerability. Breakwaters limit water currents at the bathing zone level, allowing pollutants to remain longer in the area. The direction of wind influences how pollution disperses.
