Punta Di Crabbia

Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Punta di Crabbia is a public grass beach located on Lake Orta in Pettenasco, Piedmont. The bathing area covers 0.050 km² at an altitude of 299 metres above sea level. The beach is 50 metres wide and features a mooring dock for boats. The area is particularly frequented for scuba diving in addition to swimming.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is ECCELLENTE (Excellent) based on 18 routine samples collected during 2020–2023. Escherichia coli at 90th percentile: 61.5 MPN/100 ml; at 95th percentile: 119.6 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci at 90th percentile: 37.9 MPN/100 ml; at 95th percentile: 59.9 MPN/100 ml. The bathing area falls within the Orta 3 homogeneous zone, characterised by high pressure from a high density of sewage pipelines. A pumping station located approximately 200 metres from the bathing zone and scattered houses that may not be connected to the sewage network are potential pollution sources.

Risks

Intense precipitation can trigger overflow structures and accidental malfunctions of pumping stations, resulting in untreated wastewater entering the lake. Inadequate management of the sewage network is a possible pollution source. No cyanobacterial proliferation pressures or events have been identified in the past four years. No macroalgae, phytoplankton, or harmful species proliferation has been detected.
