Quião is an urban beach integrating the beach fronts of Esteiro, Coim, Quião and Santo André in Póvoa de Varzim. The beach is approximately 89 meters long and 55 meters wide. An elevated walkway over the dunes begins at this beach, designed to protect dune biodiversity.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Weekly sampling frequency. Bathing was advised against or prohibited on 3 days during the 2024 bathing season due to short-term pollution events. Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive tributary flow during rainfall, resulting in microbiological load entrainment, and due to possible rainwater network contamination. Potential faecal contamination may originate from the Esteiro river tributary or rainwater network.

Risks

Faecal contamination from the Esteiro river tributary or rainwater network. Excessive flow of tributaries during rainfall may lead to microbiological contamination. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no historical occurrence.
