Rio Torsero is a sandy beach located in Ceriale, Liguria, bounded by artificial structures on both sides. The beach is situated at the mouth of Rio Torsero stream in an urbanized tourist and residential area backed by a railway and the SS1 road. The bathing water was included in the monitoring network from the 2019 season and achieved a Good classification for the 2019–2022 period.

Water

Coastal water body at the mouth of Rio Torsero stream in a flood plain. The bathing area extends 0.305 km².

Location

Ceriale, Province of Savona, Liguria. The beach is located at the mouth of Rio Torsero in the town center of Ceriale.

Private bathing establishments with services, free beach access, food service establishments, accommodation facilities, and camping sites.

Season

Monitoring season from 2019 onwards. Profile review scheduled for 2026.

Water Quality

Classification: Good (2019–2022 evaluation period). The bathing water is included in Area 4 of the regional Ostreopsis monitoring network (from Capo Mele to Punta Crena). The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions which prevent cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has occurred in the region over the past decade, with exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit recorded at the reference station in Pietra Ligure in August 2018, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre documented in July and August 2018, July 2021, and August 2022.

Risks

A coastal wastewater treatment plant is located approximately 65 metres northwest of the monitoring point, with two sewage pipes situated 35 metres and 15 metres from the monitoring point, discharging offshore. During heavy precipitation, increased stream flow from Rio Torsero may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata blooms can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
