Foce Rio Antognano is a coastal bathing area in Liguria featuring a vast rocky cliff with railway infrastructure alternating with pebble beach sections. The area is situated in a tourist-residential context within a broad alluvial coastal plain formed by river deposits facing the centre of Albenga. Private beach establishments with services alternate with free beach access, restaurants, accommodation structures, and campsites.

Coastal water body. The bathing area extends 1.378 km. The Rio Antognano river mouth directly impacts the bathing water.

Location

Albenga, Savona Province, Liguria. The bathing area is located at the mouth of Rio Antognano. The railway and State Road SS1 are present upstream of the beach.

Private beach establishments with services, free beach access, restaurants, accommodation structures, campsites, and other tourist-bathing infrastructure.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for the 2021–2024 four-year period: Sufficient. The Campochiesa treatment plant is located approximately 2 km upstream of the monitoring station, with a discharge pipe that passes through the bathing water before discharging offshore. A sewer pipe in the central zone of the bathing water discharges approximately 1 km from the shore. Intensified monitoring frequency is scheduled for the 2025 season due to the sufficient classification. Microalgal proliferation of Ostreopsis ovata has been documented in Liguria over the past decade. The reference station at Pietra Ligure recorded values of 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2021, August 2022, and July 2023 and 2024, with no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit during 2020–2024.

Risks

During upstream critical conditions and following precipitation, increased stream flow may transport effluent downstream. Microalgal blooms of Ostreopsis ovata may cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract problems and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
