Rugaard Strand is a sandy, gravelly, and stony beach located on the Kattegat coast east of Hyllested and Nørresø in Denmark. The beach stretches from Rugaardsvej southward along Rugaard Camping and is privately owned. The beach is 20–30 metres wide with rapid deepening, particularly in the northern section, reaching 2 metres depth at 50–130 metres from shore. Strong southward currents often occur in the area.

Water

Kattegat coastal waters. Beach width: 20–30 metres. Seabed composition: sand with smaller amounts of gravel and stone. Distance to 2-metre depth: 50–130 metres. Salinity: approximately 25 ‰. Water temperature in the bathing season varies between 10 °C and 22 °C. Strong southward currents are common.

Location

Rugaard Strand is located east of Hyllested and Nørresø on the Kattegat coast. Access is via Rugaard Camping, where approximately 20 parking spaces are available. GPS coordinates: N 56° 16.362', E 10° 49.323'.

Parking with approximately 20 spaces, picnic table set (1 piece), camping site. No public toilets.

Water Quality

Water classified as 'Excellent' quality. Bacterial levels are normally low, though occasionally slightly elevated in certain years. Wastewater discharge from rain-dependent outlets in nearby villages (Rosmos, Ballemølle, and Balle) presents a minor risk of temporary faecal pollution during rain, especially with southward current direction. Risk of blue-green algae is very low due to high salinity. Risk of other microalgae blooms is small. Risk of large seaweed accumulation is small.

Risks

Strong southward-flowing currents, particularly in the northern section. Possible temporary faecal pollution from rain-dependent wastewater outlets during rainfall. Red/reddish-brown discolouration from diatoms (Ceratium species) and ciliates (Mesodinium) in summer and autumn. Occasional weak bioluminescence from Ceratium species. Seaweed (tang) and eelgrass accumulation possible. Pollen accumulation in spring and early summer. Risk of chemical pollution from shipping accidents or incidents.
