Foce Rio Carchea is a rocky coastal bathing area with artificial structures and sandy beach sections located in the Portofino-Zoagli water body near Rapallo. The beach is situated in a residential zone to the east of Rapallo town. The area has private bathing establishments with tourist services and restaurants. It achieved an excellent water quality classification for the 2019-2022 four-year assessment period.

Coastal water body in the Portofino-Zoagli water course. Area: 1.163 km². Rocky coast alternating with sandy beach.

Location

Rapallo, Genova province, Liguria region, Italy. The bathing water is located in a residential zone east of Rapallo town. Railway and SS1 road infrastructure are located upstream, with Casale municipal park and Villa Tigullio park nearby.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2019-2022 four-year period). The Rapallo wastewater treatment plant discharges approximately 2–3 km offshore, outside the bathing water area. A secondary discharge from the treatment plant's sewage pipes passes approximately 550 m northwest of the sampling station. Port-related pollution from a small tourist marina approximately 540 m west of the monitoring station is present.

Risks

Heavy rainfall upstream can increase stream flow and potentially transport sewage downstream to the bathing area. The Rio Carchea estuary discharges directly into the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae proliferation has been detected in the surrounding regional monitoring area; the reference station at Zoagli recorded levels exceeding 30,000 cells/litre in July 2022, and levels between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre occurred in July 2018 and June 2022. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata causes temporary and reversible respiratory effects and occasional fever in sensitive individuals.
