Castello Rapallo is a coastal bathing water located in an insenature near Rapallo in Liguria, northern Italy. The beach is characterized by alternating sandy stretches, shingle, and artificial structures. The area features private beach establishments with dining facilities, and is backed by the Castello promenade, the SS1 road, railway infrastructure, and the municipal Casale park. The bathing water achieved an Excellent classification for the four-year monitoring period 2021–2024.

Water

Coastal water body within the Portofino-Zoagli water body. Area of 1.219 km². Mountain ridges with low stability (CWA3 category). Fed by the T.S.Francesco and T.Tuia watercourses, whose mouths are located directly on the bathing water.

Location

Rapallo, Genova province, Liguria region. The bathing water is located in the Rapallo insenature, facing the tourist harbor and the town of Rapallo. Access via SS1 road and railway infrastructure. Private beach establishments are present with associated services.

Private beach establishments with dining and catering services. Access permitted to animals. Castello promenade available.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (quadrennium 2021–2024). Sewage treatment discharge pipes from Rapallo treatment plant located approximately 280 m west of the sampling station, discharging about 2.9 and 2 km offshore. Harbor-related pollution source from the tourist harbor approximately 390 m west of the bathing water. During heavy precipitation, increased streamflow from torrents can transport effluent downstream.

Risks

Potential short-duration pollution events from tributary discharge (T.S.Francesco and T.Tuia) during heavy rainfall. Microalgae blooms of Ostreopsis ovata have been recorded in the regional monitoring area over the past decade. Monitoring station at Zoagli recorded exceeding limit of 30,000 cells/liter in July 2022, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/liter in June 2022 and July 2024. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata produces temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and possible fever in sensitive individuals.
