Sandomil

Portugal River 4 - Poor

Sandomil is an inland bathing water located on the Alva River in the village of Sandomil on the southwestern slope of Serra da Estrela, within the boundaries of Serra da Estrela Natural Park. The bathing area is a Type I/II beach with a mixed urban and rural environment. Infrastructure and various services complement the natural setting.

Location

Village of Sandomil, municipality of Seia, on the southwestern slope of Serra da Estrela. Monitoring point coordinates: latitude 40.35670, longitude -7.78301.

Season

June 28 to August 31, 2025.

Water Quality

Microbiological monitoring conducted at 2 samples per week. Water quality classification for 2024 under Decreto-Lei 135/09. Samples from July 29, 2024 and August 5, 2024 showed microbiological indicator values that did not comply with quality standards. Bathing was prohibited between July 31–August 2 and August 7–9, 2024 following non-compliant results. Short-term pollution events lasting less than 72 hours occurred during periods of intense rainfall. Diffuse pollution sources increased temporary microbiological degradation.

Risks

Solid waste from beach activities, flora and fauna, and high numbers of users. Low risk of pollution occurrence. Cyanobacteria proliferation assessed as likely. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation assessed as less likely.
