Santino is a sandy and gravelly beach located on the San Bernardino stream in Verbania, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. The beach spans 154 metres in width and is situated at an altitude of 197 metres above sea level. The bathing water has been classified as Good based on routine monitoring samples collected over the period 2020–2023.

Location

Verbania, Verbano Cusio Ossola province, Piedmont region, Italy. The beach is located on the left orographic bank of the San Bernardino stream. Contact: Comune di Verbania, Piazza Garibaldi 15, tel. 0323 5421.

Water Quality

Classification: Good. Based on 18 routine samples collected from 2020–2023. Escherichia coli 90th percentile: 260.1 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 423.4 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci 90th percentile: 138.8 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 208.3 MPN/100 ml. The water body has significant pressure from urban discharges and morphological alterations. A treatment plant is located approximately 5 kilometres north of the monitoring point. Scattered houses nearby may not be connected to the sewerage system.

Risks

Intense precipitation can trigger overflow structures. Accidental failures of lifting systems may discharge untreated effluent. Inadequate management of the sewerage network is a potential source of pollution. No cyanobacterial or macroalgae proliferation has been detected.
