Schoubys Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Schoubyes Sø is a small artificial lake established in 1958, located in forest east of Silkeborg. The lake has a sandy bottom overlaid with mud from accumulated algae and aquatic plants. Water plants grow throughout much of the lake and help control algal growth, though they may sometimes be inconvenient for swimmers. The water is classified as excellent quality based on monitoring data from the preceding four years.

Water

Small artificial lake without inflow or outflow. The lake bed is predominantly muddy with accumulated organic matter over a sandy base. Water is very shallow with aquatic plants covering a large portion. Minimal water exchange occurs and there is typically no significant current or dominant flow direction.

Location

The lake is located in forest east of Silkeborg, approximately 500 metres north of the main road to Aarhus. Access is via gravel roads, and a car park is available near the main road.

Facilities

Warning signs are posted at the lake if pollution or health risks are detected. Information is available at www.silkeborg.dk and announcements are made on the municipality website.

Season

Official monitoring season runs from 1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Water is classified as excellent quality based on four years of monitoring data. No wastewater discharges enter the lake. Nutrient content is relatively low, limiting risk of harmful algal blooms. Potential sources of faecal pollution are limited to swimmers and animals. No risk of chemical pollution due to isolated location.

Risks

Limited risk of cyanobacteria blooms due to low nutrient levels. Some algae growth occurs during summer months but typically not in quantities causing health problems. Other phytoplankton blooms are unlikely due to low nutrient content. Aquatic plants may be inconvenient for swimmers.
