Skaven Strand is a 650-meter-long beach located in the southeastern part of Ringkøbing Fjord near the Skaven Strand summer house area. The beach is composed of sand with scattered small stones and offers scenic views over the shallow fjord, making it very child-friendly. Water depth increases gradually offshore, with most of the fjord remaining under 2 meters deep. The beach has been classified as having satisfactory water quality based on routine monitoring of fecal bacteria indicators.

Water

Ringkøbing Fjord water classified as brackish. Water depth increases gradually from the beach, with most of the fjord under 2 meters deep. The beach is 650 meters long, 10 meters wide at its southern end, and extends to 40 meters wide at its northern end. Fjord bottom consists of sand with scattered small stones. Current direction is variable with no primary direction; measured 69 times between 2008-2010.

Location

Skaven Strand is situated in the southeastern part of Ringkøbing Fjord in Denmark. The beach is accessed via Skavenvej, which leads to a large parking area at Skaven Havn. The nearest municipality is Ringkøbing-Skjern Kommune.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as satisfactory. Classification determined by routine sampling of fecal bacteria indicators (E. coli and enterococci) during the bathing season. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season starts based on samples from the previous 4-year period.

Risks

Langkjær Grøft stream outlet south of the beach can contain high fecal bacteria concentrations during rainfall; bathing discouraged in and around this outlet. Skjern Å river outlet 2 kilometers north contains very high fecal bacteria concentrations during rainfall and up to 72 hours after rainfall ceases; bathing discouraged in and around this outlet and during rainfall. Low risk of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large macroalgae accumulation. Sudden pollution incidents possible from boat incidents, manure tanks, and sewage lines. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
