Skoutari is a sandy beach of modest width located within a natural cove on the island of Cyprus. The beach is bordered by two natural rocky promontories and contains small rocky sandstone formations. The shoreline is partially protected by retaining walls and a rubble breakwater approximately 20 metres long. Natural vegetation including shrubs and reeds covers the surrounding slopes and rocky formations. Hotel facilities are situated inland from the beach.

Water

Coastal marine water body named Protaras (code CY_25-C3). Beach length is 350 metres. Average water depth is 1 metre; maximum depth is 3 metres. The seabed substrate is sandy within the cove, with rocky formations along the promontories. The area is part of the Cyprus river basin (code CY001).

Location

Skoutari is located in the Famagusta district, administered by the Paralimni Municipality. The monitoring point is positioned at coordinates 34.0151°E, 35.0549°N (ETRS89), at the area of maximum bather concentration.

Facilities

Biological toilet available. Umbrellas and sun beds are offered. Waste collection bins are provided. Beach cleaning is the responsibility of Paralimni Municipality. Marine sports facilities are located at the southeastern boundary of the bathing water.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2008 onwards. The coastal body to which the bathing water belongs is in good ecological status. Nitrate and chlorophyll-a concentrations measured in 2004-2007 were below 2 mg/l and 2 μg/l respectively. No eutrophication was recorded during the same monitoring period. Low risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development is present.

Risks

Low risk of short-term pollution. One short-term pollution event was recorded between 2008 and 2010 (15 September 2009). Potential sources of short-term pollution include malfunction of sewage systems in coastal developments. Possible pollution sources from marine sports and recreational vessels approaching the bathing water.
