Føns Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Føns Strand is a bathing beach approximately 1200 metres long located at the head of Føns Vig in northern Lillebælt. The northern section is about half a metre wide and features a 27-metre protective wall with a concrete staircase leading to the water. The central and southern sections have approximately 10 metres of sandy beach backed by marsh land. The beach bottom consists of sand with some eelgrass vegetation, and depths increase relatively quickly.

Water

Brackish water body in Føns Vig, a bay in northern Lillebælt, with salinity of 15–17 PSU. Current conditions are weak; observations show no current in two-thirds of cases, and when present, flows are typically northward.

Location

Føns Strand is located in Middelfart Municipality in the village of Føns. Access is via Fønsvej, crossing a dike to reach the beach area. Access is also available on foot through the summer house area. A car park, toilets, and outdoor showers are available on the eastern side of Føns Strandvej at the northern end of the beach.

Facilities

Three lifeguard rescue posts on the beach. Car park, toilets, and outdoor showers at the northern end. Tables and benches in the marsh area. Rubbish bins at the car park. A bathing bridge in the centre of the beach with a boat launching area. A snorkel trail on the north side of the bridge. A floating pontoon with a changing hut on the south side. Føns Vig Jollehavn (sailing harbour) at the southern end.

Season

At least 10 water samples are collected during the bathing season.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as EXCELLENT based on measurements of enterococci and E. coli over the last four years in accordance with EU bathing water directive rules.

Risks

Low risk of cyanobacterial blooms; cyanobacteria occur primarily in the Baltic Sea and can only spread to northern Lillebælt during prolonged easterly winds. No phytoplankton blooms observed in the last 5 years. Seaweed (eelgrass and macroalgae) is washed ashore periodically and is removed during the summer season in the Blue Flag area.
