Sonnerup Skov

Sonnerup Skov is a bathing site located on the coast of Kattegat, north of Lumsås in Denmark. The beach features a sandy strand with some stones, approximately 250 metres long and 13 metres wide. The water is brackish, a mixture of salt and fresh water. The bathing water is classified as excellent quality based on data from 2020–2023.

Water

Brackish water (mixture of salt and fresh water) in Kattegat. At the sampling point, approximately 14 metres to reach 0.5 metres depth and 100 metres to reach 2 metres depth. Water flow is predominantly westward (east to west).

Location

The bathing site is located at the end of Skovagervej in Odsherred Kommune, Denmark. There is no dedicated parking at the beach itself, but parking is available at the Natural Resources Authority car park on Nordre Strandvej approximately 200 metres east of Skovagervej, with a woodland walk of less than 1 kilometre down to the beach.

Water Quality

Water is classified as excellent quality (based on 2020–2023 data). Risk of cyanobacteria, phytoplankton, and macroalgae growth is low. A registered discharge outlet is located approximately 400 metres east and another approximately 900 metres west of the bathing site. A combined system outlet is located approximately 600 metres west with overflow during heavy rainfall. One fecal contamination incident occurred in late August 2019, attributed to heavy rainfall beforehand. In February 2024, testing for 22 PFAS compounds detected no traces.

Risks

Possible fecal contamination from registered discharge outlets, with duration typically 1–3 days in summer depending on weather, currents, and wind. PFAS contamination from an inland area approximately 900 metres west is under investigation; bathing is not recommended around this outlet as a precautionary measure. Bathers are advised not to swim if water is unclear and feet cannot be seen at knee depth. Children should not play or bathe near algae washed up on the beach. Glass, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur.
