Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Stilling Strand is a natural beach located at the western end of Stilling-Solbjerg Lake in Stilling, within Skanderborg Municipality. The beach features a sand strip approximately 25 metres wide with grass areas and trees along the water. Behind the beach is a steep slope leading to an upper plateau with views over the lake. The beach is owned by Stilling Håndværker- og Borgerforening but operated by Skanderborg Municipality as a public area.

Water

Stilling-Solbjerg Lake. Area: 383 hectares. Maximum depth: 19 metres. Average depth: 8.1 metres. The lake is classified as calcareous, non-brown water, freshwater, and deep. Summer water temperature approximately 14–22 degrees Celsius. Inflows include Løjenkær Bæk, Blegindmose Bæk, Møddebro Bæk, Vitved Bæk, and Pilbrodal Bæk. Main outflow is to Aarhus River, which drains into Aarhus Bay. The overall ecological status of the lake is classified as poor and does not meet the objective of good ecological status.

Location

Stilling, Skanderborg Municipality. Access from Stadionsvej or Rønnevej with parking at the stadium. A continuous path for pedestrians and cyclists runs from Søvejen. Bus 107 stops at Stilling Byvej. The beach may be difficult to access for wheelchair users or those with mobility difficulties.

Bathing bridge, information board, waste bins with sorting, picnic tables, toilet facilities, rescue post, bus connections, fire pit.

Season

Monitoring takes place throughout the entire bathing season. Specific season dates are not provided.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'Excellent', the highest classification under the Bathing Water Regulation. This classification is based on recent years of bathing water analyses regarding faecal bacteria. Potential pollution sources include overflow events from combined sewer systems, discharges from scattered dwellings, accidental emergency overflows, manure spillage, emptying of toilet tanks from leisure boats, and fuel refilling on boats. Nutrient leaching from the catchment and pesticide leaching occur but are not assessed as causing direct problems for bathing water quality. Several overflows around the lake pose a risk during heavy rainfall with potential for diluted wastewater discharge.

Risks

Algal blooms are a recurring phenomenon in the nutrient-rich lake and can periodically pose a health risk to swimmers. Blue-green algae blooms can occur in late summer when the lake becomes stratified. Diatom blooms occur in spring months and rarely cause problems for swimmers. Risk of faecal contamination from overflow events during heavy rainfall.
