Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Søbadet is the largest and most visited beach at Skanderborg Lake, located in a natural landscape within a designated forest reserve. The beach features a small sandy area backed by a large grassy space with scattered trees, bordered by reed beds and trees to the north and south. A footpath runs through the area, and the beach is known for its scenic surroundings in Skanderborg Municipality. The beach is closed during the local festival, during which alternative bathing facilities are available at Bybadet in Skanderborg.

Water

Skanderborg Lake is a freshwater lake with a total surface area of 860 hectares. Maximum depth is 18.8 meters, with an average depth of 8 meters. The lake consists of two nearly equal basins: Store Sø and Hylke Sø. Summer water temperature ranges from approximately 14–22 degrees Celsius. The lake is part of the Gudenå system and drains to Mossø through Vrold Sø, Tåning Sø, and Tåning Å.

Location

Located at Dyrehaven, Skanderborg Lake, approximately 1.5 km south of Skanderborg town. Access via Dyrehaven with parking in the forest approximately 50 m from the beach. Bus route 107 stops at Dyrehavevej near Sølund.

Facilities

Large bathing pier, diving board and diving platforms, playground, bonfire area, tables and benches, toilet facilities, changing rooms, shower facilities, rescue post, information signs, parking, bus connections, and nearby disc golf course.

Season

Bathing water analysis is performed throughout the entire bathing season. Kommunen foretager kontrol af badevandskvaliteten i hele badesæsonen.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'Excellent', the highest classification under Danish bathing water regulations. Classification is based on analysis of fecal bacteria from recent bathing water monitoring. Overall ecological status of Skanderborg Lake is classified as moderate.

Risks

Isolated overflows around Skanderborg Lake pose a risk during heavy rainfall with potential discharge of diluted wastewater. Cyanobacterial blooms occur periodically, particularly in late summer months when the lake becomes stratified. Algal blooms are a common phenomenon in nutrient-rich lakes and can at times present a significant problem for bathing. Five advisory rules are recommended: do not swim if water is unclear to knee depth; avoid colored water or accumulated algae; prevent children and animals from contact with algae and foam; observe warning signs; and use common sense regardless of signage.
