Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Næsset is a sandy beach located on the east side of Skanderborg Lake, approximately 3 kilometres from Skanderborg town centre in central Jutland, Denmark. The beach measures approximately 8 by 8 metres of sand with extensive grassed areas suitable for ball games and other activities. The beach is calm and child-friendly, used primarily by residents of the nearby residential area, with shade available from large trees on the grassed area. The terrain slopes gently toward the water and is accessible to wheelchair users, though no wheelchair ramp is present.

Skanderborg Lake is a freshwater lake in the Gudenå river system with a surface area of 632 square kilometres. The lake has an average depth of 8 metres and maximum depth of 18.8 metres. Water temperature in the bathing areas ranges from 14 to 22 degrees Celsius in summer. The lake bed at Næsset consists of sand, but is not deep enough for diving from the bathing jetty.

Location

The beach is located on the east side of Skanderborg Lake at Oddervej, approximately 3 kilometres from Skanderborg town centre. Access is available from the residential quarter on the peninsula between numbers 28 and 30, where a path leads to the beach. Regional bus 331 and local route L1 provide bus connections from Oddervej. A grass path runs along the lake for pedestrians and cyclists. GPS coordinates: UTM 32, 558741, 6210570.

Bathing water analyses are conducted throughout the entire bathing season. Blue-green algae blooms typically occur from April to October, with the highest risk in late summer months.

Water Quality

The bathing water at Næsset is classified as 'Excellent', the highest classification available, based on water analyses from 2006 to 2009. Over 95% of bathing water analyses showed values below 500 for E. coli and below 200 for enterococci. The beach is not exposed to significant faecal pollution from overflow events or dispersed settlements. Blue-green algae blooms occur in Skanderborg Lake, particularly in late summer months, representing a high risk when water becomes unclear, discoloured, or shows foam formation and surface blooms.

Contact with algal toxins can cause diarrhoea, headaches, skin irritations, fever, and nausea. Children, the elderly, and people with allergies are particularly susceptible. The invasive zebra mussel has been documented in the Gudenå system since 2006. Potential faecal pollution sources include overflow events from combined sewerage systems and discharges from dispersed settlements, though the beach is not considered to be exposed to significant faecal pollution.
