Ravns Odde

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Ravns Odde is a natural beach located on the south side of Skanderborg Lake in central Jutland, Denmark. The beach is approximately 25 metres wide and bordered by reeds, trees, and bushes, with a large flat grass area suitable for ball games. The water is shallow, reaching a depth of approximately 75 centimetres at the end of the bathing jetty, making diving prohibited. The bottom consists of sand and mud.

Water

Skanderborg Lake is part of the Gudenå river system. The lake has a surface area of 632 square kilometres, a mean depth of 8 metres, and a maximum depth of 18.8 metres. Summer water temperatures range from 14 to 22 degrees Celsius. The lake is classified as lake type 9: calcareous, non-humic, freshwater, and shallow. It has moderate ecological status.

Location

Ravns Odde is situated on Skanderborg Lake in Skanderborg Municipality, central Jutland. Access is from Hylke Møllevej near the golf course. Parking is available at the beach.

Tables and benches, parking area, waste bin, bonfire area, dry toilet.

Season

Monitoring occurs throughout the bathing season. Algal blooms typically occur from April to October, with the highest risk in late summer months.

Water Quality

Water at Ravns Odde is classified as 'Excellent', the highest classification. Over 95% of bathing water analyses from 2006–2009 showed E. Coli values below 500 and Enterococcal values below 200. The beach is not considered to be exposed to significant faecal contamination from overflow events or dispersed settlements.

Risks

High risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms in summer months, particularly after rainy periods followed by warm, calm, sunny weather. Blooms can cause foam formation, surface scum, and water discoloration. Contact with cyanobacterial toxins may cause diarrhoea, headache, skin irritation, fever, and nausea. Invasive zebra mussels are present in the Gudenå system.
