Sturla Est is a predominantly pebbly and rocky beach located in the densely populated Genova Sturla urban area of Genoa, Liguria. The beach fronts the residential settlement along the coast. The water body is classified as Good quality based on monitoring data from 2010–2013. The Ligurian Sea in this area does not experience cyanobacterial blooms due to oligotrophic conditions, and no cases of potentially toxic algal proliferation have been recorded.

Coastal waters (CWA3 – Mountainous Relief Low Stability). Water body designation: Genova – Camogli. Area extent: 0.132 square kilometres. The beach is predominantly pebbly and rocky, fronting the road and urban settlement.

Location

Genova Sturla, Genoa, Liguria, Italy. The beach is situated in a densely inhabited coastal zone near the urban settlement of Genova Sturla.

Water Quality

Classification: Good (2010–2013). Pollution sources identified include coastal treatment plants at Punta Vagno and Sturla (both with active discharge), river mouths, and the Torrente Sturla watercourse. No special measures or specific monitoring programmes are currently activated.

Risks

The area is subject to short-duration pollution events from coastal sewage treatment plants and active discharge pipes. A modelling approach for management of anomalous situations is under development. Cyanobacterial blooms do not occur due to oligotrophic conditions in the Ligurian Sea. No toxic algal proliferation events have been recorded in the past four years.
