Vernazzola Beach is a coarse-grained pebble beach located in a small cove in front of the Vernazzola urban settlement in Genoa. The beach is bounded to the east by a fishing village with small fishermen's houses and to the west by an artificial structure. It is a free public beach with an area of 0.226 km² situated in the Ligurian Sea, classified as coastal waters with mountainous terrain and low stability.

Location

Genoa, Liguria region, Italy. The beach is in the municipality of Genoa, bordering the Vernazzola fishing village to the east and an artificial structure to the west.

Facilities

Fishing club with small boats, sports canoeing centre (Club Sportivo Urania Vernazzola), sailing club (la Ciappeletta).

Water Quality

Classification for 2019–2022 season: Excellent. The Ligurian Sea is characterised by preponderant oligotrophic conditions. Monitoring station reference: BAGN at Bagnara (Genoa). No cyanobacterial blooms are present. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has been recorded in Liguria over the past decade, with the bathing water located in Area 8 of the regional Ostreopsis monitoring network.

Risks

The Sturla wastewater treatment plant is located immediately outside the eastern boundary approximately 190 m from the monitoring point, with two sewage pipes discharging approximately 700 and 1500 m from the shore, outside the bathing water area. During upstream critical conditions and weather-related precipitation, increased stream flow may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata proliferation can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals when inhaled through aerosol.
