VIA 5 MAGGIO is a bathing area in Genova, characterized by small pebble and shingle beaches located in front of the densely inhabited urban settlement of Genova Sturla. The coastline alternates between natural sandy and pebbly stretches and artificial structures. The area is classified as excellent quality for bathing water. The Ligurian Sea does not experience cyanobacteria blooms due to predominantly oligotrophic conditions.

Location

Genova, Liguria region, Italy. The bathing area is situated in the Genova Sturla district, adjacent to an urban settlement. Competent authorities: Comune di Genova, Palazzo Tursi, via Garibaldi 9; Guardia Costiera, via Magazzini Generali n. 4.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2008-2011). No coastal wastewater treatment plants, outfalls, or Imhoff tanks are present. Cyanobacteria blooms do not occur due to oligotrophic conditions. In July 2010, a threshold exceedance was recorded for Ostreopsis ovata concentration. Algal bloom monitoring was conducted on water samples.

Risks

Potentially toxic algal strains have occurred; specifically, Ostreopsis ovata threshold exceedance was documented in July 2010. The aquatic ecosystem showed typical signs of stress during algal bloom periods.
