Sturla Ovest is a pebble and shingle beach in the Genoa municipality, delimited on the western side by an artificial cliff. The beach is situated in front of the Sturla fishing village and offers tourist services and dining facilities. The area includes the Vele Vernazzolesi sailing club and the Ass.Sportiva Pescatori Dilettanti Sturla fishing association. The beach is classified as Poor quality based on the four-year assessment period 2020-2023.

Water

Coastal water body (Genoa-Camogli). The bathing area covers 0.103 km². The beach has coarse granulometry and is situated at the mouth of the Torrente Sturla, facing a densely populated urban settlement.

Location

Located in Genoa, Liguria region, in the municipality of Genoa. The beach fronts the Sturla village. The SS1 highway and Villa Gentile athletic field are situated inland from the beach.

Facilities

Tourist services and dining facilities are available. The Vele Vernazzolesi sailing club and Ass.Sportiva Pescatori Dilettanti Sturla fishing association operate in the area.

Water Quality

Classification: Poor. Water quality assessment for 2020-2023 shows Poor classification. Intensified monitoring frequency is scheduled for 2024 due to the Poor classification. The Sturla coastal treatment plant has two sewage pipes located approximately 145 m to the west and 60 m to the east of the monitoring station. The eastern pipe crosses the bathing water and discharges to the southwest offshore.

Risks

Discharge from the Sturla wastewater treatment plant occurs approximately 700 m to 1.5 km from the shore. Increased stream flow from precipitation can transport effluents downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been observed in the region, with reference station readings exceeding 30,000 cells/litre in July 2019 and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2022 and 2023. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract problems and fever in sensitive individuals.
