Santa Chiara is a bathing water area located in a small rocky cove on the Genoa coast in the Liguria region. The area features cliffs and artificial structures within a closed inlet that extends westward to the village of Boccadasse. The bathing water was established and began monitoring in 2020, replacing a broader water body known as Rio Vernazzo that had been previously designated. The area is subject to potential influences from urban discharge and seasonal weather events.

Coastal water body in the Ligurian Sea. The bathing area covers 0.385 square kilometres and is situated within a small inlet on a flat coastal stretch with artificial structures. The Rio Chiappeto is the reference river basin.

Location

Genoa, Liguria region, Italy. The bathing area is bounded to the east by the Rio Chiappeto estuary and to the west by the village of Boccadasse. The Sturla wastewater treatment plant is located approximately 350 metres east of the sampling station, with discharge pipes discharging about 0.6 to 1.6 kilometres from the shore. Private beach facilities and free beach areas are available, along with restaurants. The borough of Boccadesse is located to the west.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as coastal water with low stability in a mountainous area. Monitoring began in 2020. The water body is located in an urbanised context. A permanent prohibition zone exists at the Rio Chiappeto estuary at the eastern boundary due to potential sewage discharge.

Risks

Heavy rainfall and upstream precipitation can increase stream flow and potentially transport sewage downstream to the bathing area. The Rio Chiappeto estuary at the eastern boundary poses a risk due to its location at the water's edge. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been documented in the region, with events recorded in June and August 2018, and July 2019 at reference station Bagnara, producing temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals when inhaled as aerosol.
