Taarbæk Havn is a bathing site located on the Øresund coast near the town of Taarbæk, north of Copenhagen. Swimming takes place from a bathing pier extending from the southern mole of the harbour, rather than from a traditional beach. The seabed consists almost entirely of sand, with water depth of approximately 1.5 metres at the end of the pier and reaching 2 metres depth about 50 metres from shore. The site had Blue Flag status in 2011. Water quality at Taarbæk Havn is classified as excellent, the highest quality classification for bathing water.

Water

Øresund is a narrow marine area influenced by fresher water masses from the Baltic Sea and saltier water from the Kattegat. Surface currents flow northward with brackish water from the Baltic in approximately 60% of the time, with the remaining time showing southward or stationary flow. Deeper currents flow southward with salt water from the Kattegat approximately 70% of the time. Water salinity in depths less than 15-20 metres is relatively brackish (5-18 ppt), while deeper areas exceed 30 ppt. Water temperature varies between approximately 10°C and 20°C.

Location

Taarbæk Havn, Klampenborg 2930, located on the Øresund coast between Øresund and Dyrehaven north of Copenhagen. Taarbæk Strandvej runs parallel to the coast approximately 50 metres from the harbour. There are no parking spaces at the harbour, but parking is available along Taarbæk Strandvej with a 2-hour parking limit and free parking options.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent, the highest classification according to bathing water regulations. Potential sources of short-term fecal pollution include overflows from combined sewers and emptying of toilet tanks from recreational boats. An overflow structure at Becksvej approximately 30 metres south of the bathing site can cause elevated fecal bacteria concentrations. Another combined sewer outlet approximately 400 metres south at Bombegrunden beach may overflow with diluted wastewater during heavy rainfall events, estimated to occur approximately once yearly in very small quantities.

Risks

Blue-green algae blooms occur annually in summer, particularly in warm late summers (August–September) with stationary water conditions; sea urchins present in deeper waters but risk of injury assessed as low; sea lice (Liropus palpalis) in bathing season with highest risk during offshore wind conditions; kelp and seagrass deposits with risk of bacterial growth during decomposition; low risk of chemical pollution from shipping accidents; pollen accumulation possible in spring and early summer; oxygen depletion in deeper areas of Øresund but low risk in shallow coastal areas; other microscopic algae blooms possible during periods of strong Kattegat water inflow; risk of fecal pollution from combined sewer overflows assessed as low.
