Taarbæk Søbadeanstalt is a small bathing facility of approximately 150 square meters located on the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen, between Taarbæk Strandvej and the shoreline. The beach features a 20-meter-long and 5-meter-wide sand beach situated above coastal protection structures of large wave-breaker stones and a concrete wall. The facility is situated in a residential area of Taarbæk between a sailing club to the north and private buildings to the south, within a town of approximately 2,000 inhabitants.

Water

Øresund, a narrow strait between Denmark and Sweden. The water is brackish (5–18 promille salinity in shallower areas of less than 15–20 meters depth) due to influence from fresher Baltic Sea water in the upper layers and saltier water from the Kattegat in deeper layers. Surface current flow is predominantly northward approximately 60% of the time. Water temperature varies between approximately 10°C and 20°C.

Taarbæk, on the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen. Address: Taarbæk Strandvej 80, 2930 Klampenborg. The bathing facility is located approximately 200 meters south of Taarbæk Harbour. Limited parking is available along Taarbæk Strandvej; note that a 2-hour parking limit applies.

Facilities

Bathing pier, tables and benches, rubbish bins. Dogs are prohibited on the beach.

Water Quality

Preliminary water quality classification is excellent, the second-highest classification under Danish bathing water regulations. Analysis of bathing water data from the municipality over four years shows stable conditions with normally low bacterial levels. Slightly elevated values of E. coli and enterococci were registered late in the 2010 bathing season; the cause is unknown.

Risks

Blue-green algae blooms occur annually in summer, particularly in warm late summer (August–September) with stagnant water; risk is highest during periods of major water inflow from the Baltic Sea. Sea lice (stinging jellyfish) risk is highest during offshore winds. Stinging weaver fish present in shallow water during summer months, though overall risk of injury is low. Seaweed and eelgrass wash-up can occur but poses low health risk. Chemical pollution from shipping accidents poses low risk. Pollen accumulation can locally reduce water quality but poses low risk. Fecal contamination risk from combined sewer overflows is low; overflows from Bombegrunden occur approximately once yearly in small quantities, and overflows from Nordre Molevej are rare. Risk from toilet tank emptying from pleasure boats is low.
