Germany Lake 2 - Good

Gederner See is a recreational lake with an area of 12.7 hectares located in a valley within the Vogelsberg region northwest of Gedern, Germany. The lake was created around 1700 by Count Ludwig Christian zu Stolberg-Gedern through the construction of a dam for fish cultivation. It features an officially designated bathing area at the campground with a sandy beach and gently sloping shoreline, making it suitable for families with children. An aquapark with water play equipment is available, along with a camping facility and holiday village on its shores.

Water

A pond (Weiher) with a surface area of 12.7 hectares, maximum depth of 3.0 metres, and mean depth of 1.79 metres. It is fed by a small stream from the northeast direction. The shallow depth prevents stable temperature stratification in summer, causing the entire water body to warm considerably.

Location

The bathing area is located northwest of Gedern in the Vogelsberg. Access is via the B275 highway to Gedern, with signposting toward the Campingpark in town. The designated bathing spot is situated at the campground on the northwestern shore.

Facilities

Sandy beach with gently sloping shoreline, large sunbathing meadow, aquapark with water play equipment, sufficient toilets, outdoor showers, kiosk, restaurant, boat rental (rowing and pedal boats).

Water Quality

2025 annual classification: Excellent quality. 2024: Good quality. 2023: Good quality. 2022: Adequate quality. 2021: Good quality. Water samples are tested for enterococci and Escherichia coli. Elevated indicator bacteria values have occurred in recent years. Monitoring results from 2025 show enterococci levels ranging from <15 to 45 KBE/100ml and E. coli from 15 to 77 KBE/100ml. Possible pollution sources under investigation include inputs from the surrounding area and runoff from forest, campground, or meadows.

Risks

Elevated indicator bacteria values in recent years. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms during summer due to shallow depth and elevated nutrient content. Cyanobacteria mass occurrences have been observed toward the end of bathing seasons, which can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Trophic classification is eutroph 1 with a medium risk of future cyanobacteria mass occurrences and high frequency of observed cyanobacteria blooms during bathing seasons.
