Tversted Strand is a 500-metre-long, 100-metre-wide beach composed of fine sand without large stones. Located near the towns of Tannisby and Tversted on Denmark's northwest coast, the beach attracts both local residents and summer visitors. The bathing water is classified as excellent quality based on routine monitoring of indicator bacteria.

Water

Saltwater body in Skagerrak. Water depth under 2 metres extends approximately 100 metres from the shore. Depth conditions vary significantly due to tidal, current and weather conditions. Dominant current direction is from the west.

Location

Located approximately 1 km from Tannisby and Tversted (population 601 year-round residents, increasing to several thousand in summer). Two summer cottage areas are located southwest and southeast of the dunes. Åbo Camping and Tannisby Camping are located south of the beach in Tversted.

Water Quality

Water classified as excellent quality based on monitoring data from 2011–2014. Routine samples analyse two indicator bacteria: E. coli and enterococci. E. coli concentration must not exceed 250 per 100 ml (95th percentile) for excellent classification; enterococci must not exceed 100 per 100 ml (95th percentile). Classification is revised annually before the bathing season.

Risks

Tversted Å (650 metres southwest) and Flodbæk (approximately 1 km northeast) are known pollution sources that can influence water quality. Combined sewers in Tversted can release untreated wastewater to Tversted Å during heavy rainfall via two overflow structures. Uggerby Å (approximately 1.5 km west) may influence water quality during very heavy rain. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of large macroalgae accumulation is low. Glass shards, waste and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
