Kjul Strand is a bathing beach located approximately 3 kilometres east of Hirtshals, a port town with 6,268 inhabitants. The beach consists of fine sand with few small stones and measures approximately 75 metres wide and 500 metres long. The seabed in the area also comprises fine sand with few small stones. Dunes separate the beach from the summer house area. Water depth under 2 metres extends approximately 200 metres from the shore, though depth conditions vary considerably due to tidal and weather conditions.

Water

Saltwater body located in Skagerrak. Water depth under 2 metres extends approximately 200 metres from the shore. Primary current direction is from the west, with variable current patterns. Depth conditions are subject to considerable variation over short periods due to tidal, current, and weather conditions.

Location

The beach is located north of the Kjul Strand and Kjul Camping area, approximately 3 kilometres east of Hirtshals. Access is via Kjulvej, and parking is available on the beach.

Season

Routine monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Classification revision takes place annually in May.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring of E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria during the bathing season. Excellent classification indicates very low concentrations of faecal bacteria. Classification is recalculated annually before the bathing season begins, with previous assessments based on samples collected between 2011 and 2014.

Risks

A rainwater discharge/drain is located in the middle of the beach and poses risk of high faecal bacteria concentrations during rainfall. Kjul Å stream outlet is located approximately 350 metres west of the beach and periodically contains high concentrations of faecal bacteria. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is assessed as low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is assessed as low. Risk of large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) washing ashore is assessed as low. Sudden water pollution may occur from ship incidents, manure tankers, and sewer lines. Glass fragments, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
