Tversted Strand is a 500-meter-long, 100-meter-wide beach composed of fine sand without larger stones. The beach is located approximately 1 km from the villages of Tannisby and Tversted in Hjørring Municipality, Denmark. The water body is classified as saltwater in Skagerrak with water depth under 2 meters extending approximately 100 meters from the shore. The beach is designated as an excellent bathing location based on routine monitoring of fecal indicator bacteria.

Location

Tversted Strand is situated approximately 1 km from Tannisby and Tversted, which have grown together. The beach is located 500 meters east of the access point at Tversted. Summer housing areas are situated southwest and southeast of the beach dunes. Åbo Camping and Tannisby Camping are located in Tversted south of the beach.

Season

Bathing water monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Classification is revised annually in May before the season starts.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification based on routine monitoring from 2011–2014 measuring E. coli and enterococci levels. The classification is revised annually before the bathing season. Identified pollution sources include Tversted Å (650 meters southwest) and Flodbæk (1 km northeast), both capable of influencing water quality. Tversted Å is a known pollution source with combined sewer overflows that can discharge untreated wastewater during heavy rain, potentially causing exceedances when currents flow from the west. Uggerby Å (1.5 km west) may also influence water quality during very heavy rain.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom assessed as low. Risk of phytoplankton bloom assessed as low. Risk of large macroalgae (seaweed) washup assessed as low. Sudden changes in water depth may occur following sandbar breakthroughs. Glass fragments, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Sudden contamination possible from ship incidents, manure tank leaks, and sewer pipe failures.
