Vijūnėlės pond bathing area is located in Vijūnėlės Park in Druskininkai, Lithuania. The bathing zone extends 220 metres along a mixed shoreline with natural grassland and sand, with a sandy bottom cleaned of silt in 2011. The pond has an average depth of 1.6 metres and maximum depth of 2.1 metres. The recreational area includes rest zones, active leisure zones, and dining facilities. Water quality from 2018 to 2024 has consistently met excellent quality requirements.

Water

Vijūnėlės pond (tvenkinys). Sandy bottom with average depth of 1.6 metres and maximum depth of 2.1 metres. Shoreline extends 220 metres with mixed structure including natural grassland, sand, and trees (pines and maples). The basin receives an average annual rainfall of 669 millimetres, with October having the highest precipitation and September the lowest.

Location

The bathing area is located in Druskininkai, Alytus District, Lithuania, within Vijūnėlės Park. Coordinates: X=54.0156, Y=23.9662. Maximum visitor capacity is approximately 500 people during peak season with favourable weather conditions.

Facilities

Two showers, four toilets in one building, three changing cabins. Waste bins and two waste collection containers present. Waste removal follows a contracted schedule. Domestic animals and other pets are prohibited from the beach and forbidden from bathing.

Season

Official water quality monitoring and reporting to the European Commission conducted annually in accordance with Directive 2006/7/EB requirements since 2008.

Water Quality

Water quality classifications from 2018 to 2024 show excellent quality consistently. The pond is part of the Nemunas river basin (Nemunas minor tributaries sub-basin) with maximum ecological potential status based on nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. No domestic wastewater discharge into the pond. Quarterly monitoring for cyanobacteria, algae, and marine phytoplankton has been conducted since 2015.

Risks

Possible surface runoff of rainwater during heavy rainfall, with pollution disappearing within 1–2 days after rain ceases. Upstream water bodies (Mergelių akys lakes) may act as potential pollution sources. Eutrophication risk has been addressed through pond sediment cleaning work.
