Villa Botto is a bathing water area located in Ventimiglia, Liguria, featuring a sandy-pebbly beach alternating with rocky coastline. The beach is situated adjacent to an ancient villa and is part of the Capo Mortola water body. The area is characterized by rocky coast and is classified as coastal water with low stability. The bathing water has achieved an excellent classification for the four-year period 2020–2023.

Coastal water body (Capo Mortola). Area extends 0.614 km. Rocky coast with alternating sandy-pebbly beach sections.

Location

Ventimiglia, Liguria, province of Imperia, Italy. The beach is located at Capo Mortola near an ancient villa. The State Road SS1, railway, and motorway are located inland above the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (four-year evaluation period 2020–2023). No treatment plants are present in the area. A sewage pipe approximately 420 metres west of the sampling point discharges offshore, outside the bathing water area. The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has occurred in Liguria over the past decade. The reference monitoring station at Tino in Mortola recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit between 2019 and 2023.

Risks

Sewage discharge pipe located 400 metres west of the sampling point discharges approximately 420 metres offshore. During heavy rainfall and upstream critical conditions, increased stream flow from the Vallelatte river (located at the western boundary of the bathing water) may transport effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae can produce temporary and reversible respiratory effects through aerosol inhalation in sensitive individuals.
