Vis-Aire Amenagee

Gorniès Aire Aménagée is a bathing area located on the Vis river in the Cévennes region of southern France. The site features a small pebble beach with a designated swimming zone of 50 metres length and 10 metres width. The bathing area is situated in a mountainous landscape characterized by natural forests and is surrounded by sparse urbanization.

Water

The Vis river, a mountain torrent with zones of shallows. At the bathing site, the average width is 16 metres with depth of 0.65 metres under low-water conditions. The river has a low-flow discharge of 2.74 cubic metres per second in August and an average module of 3 cubic metres per second.

Location

Municipality of Gorniès, Hérault department, Languedoc Roussillon region. The site is accessible via road D25 and has a parking area with 20 spaces plus additional roadside parking for 40 vehicles.

Facilities

Unsupervised bathing area. One waste container located at the parking entrance. No lifeguard post, no toilets, no showers, no other equipment. Public access is easy for all visitors. Animals are not prohibited.

Season

Typical swimming period is summer; monitoring was conducted from June through August during years 2006–2010.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for the 2009 monitoring period. Bacterial monitoring from 2006–2010 showed E. coli concentrations with a 95th percentile of 90 per 100 millilitres and enterococci at 88 per 100 millilitres. The 2010 simulation indicated excellent quality classification.
