A pebbly beach located in the urbanized area of Ospedaletti in Liguria, Italy. The beach is situated along the coast facing the town with a seaside promenade, cycle path, and a sailing club inland. The bathing water is classified as excellent based on the 2019-2022 four-year evaluation period. The area is characterized by coastal, mountainous terrain with low stability.

Coastal water body (Sanremo water body). The bathing area extends 1.093 km. Water category: coastal waters with mountainous relief and low stability.

Location

Ospedaletti, Imperia Province, Liguria region, Italy. The beach is in front of the town centre with access from Via XX Settembre. A tourist marina is located approximately 390 metres to the west of the monitoring station.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (four-year period 2019-2022). The water body is part of the Ligurian Sea regional monitoring network. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have been observed in the region over the past decade. Reference monitoring station at Santo Stefano al Mare showed no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit from 2019 to 2023, though values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in August 2019 and July 2022.

Risks

Wastewater treatment plant outfalls from Ospedaletti discharge approximately 700 metres and 1.1 kilometres offshore, outside the bathing water boundary. The Porrine River mouth is located on the western boundary of the bathing water. Heavy rainfall can increase stream flow and potentially transport effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae can produce respiratory irritation and temporary fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
