20 M SUD MISSISSIPI is a sandy bathing beach located in Gabicce Mare, Marche region. The beach spans an average width of 94 metres and is situated between the Mississippi bar pier and bathing establishment number 25. Granulometric analysis from 2003 shows the beach composition is 98.49% fine sand and 1.51% silt, with fine sand dominating the submerged section and mud present near breakwaters. The area is densely urbanised.

Coastal bathing water (Litorale between Gabicce and Pesaro). Beach area extends 0.40524 square kilometres.

Location

Gabicce Mare, province of Pesaro Urbino, Marche region. The bathing area extends between the Mississippi bar pier and bathing establishment number 25 on the beach.

Facilities

One bar and 11 bathing establishments, all with beach access and accessible services. Lifeguard authority: Guardia Costiera (Coast Guard, telephone 1530). Animals are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E. The Gabicce Mare treatment plant, located at Campo Quadro, serves the area with a capacity of 49,600 population equivalents and treats wastewater from Gabicce and Gradara. In 2010, the plant achieved over 95% reduction in organic load (COD and BOD5 parameters) and equal reduction in suspended solids and ammonia nitrogen. Annual mean concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus comply with regulatory limits, with concentrations below 15 mg/L for total nitrogen and below 2 mg/L for total phosphorus. The municipality is entirely served by a sewer network, predominantly separate type (90%), with 9 pumping stations.

Risks

The Tavollo river mouth is present; under particular meteorological conditions it may convey mixed waters from relief overflows connected to the Gabicce treatment plant. A motor pleasure craft operates on the border between bathing establishments 22 and 23; a marked and signalled launch corridor is in place to manage potential conflicts.
