Cattolica - Tra 1 e 2 scogliera is a sandy beach spanning approximately 800 metres in Cattolica, in the Emilia-Romagna region. The beach is protected by a series of parallel breakwaters and is situated in a high-tourism area with numerous hotels and beach facilities. A rescue service operates throughout the bathing season. The beach maintains excellent water quality and experiences medium visitor traffic.

Water

Coastal marine waters in a flat alluvial area with high stability. The bathing water area extends approximately 1.015 km². The beach is protected by parallel breakwaters approximately 100 metres long, spaced about 20 metres apart, inclined at approximately 15° to the coastline and situated about 100 metres from the shore.

Location

Located in Cattolica, Rimini Province, Emilia-Romagna. The area extends along the central-southern coast and borders the Cattolica port area to the south. Beach width is 100–120 metres.

Facilities

33 beach establishments with first aid services, toilets accessible to persons with disabilities, hot showers, no architectural barriers, sports facilities, and food services. Lifeguard service present throughout the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2015–2018). Escherichia coli (90th percentile): 113 CFU/100 ml; Escherichia coli (95th percentile): 182 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci (90th percentile): 40 CFU/100 ml; Intestinal enterococci (95th percentile): 53 CFU/100 ml. No direct discharge points or watercourses feed into the bathing water. The area is subject to periodic sand extraction due to excessive sedimentation near the breakwaters that reduces water circulation.

Risks

During periods of intense precipitation, potential discharges from the Torrente Tavollo may activate; the river mouth is located south of the bathing area and forms the Cattolica Port Canal. The Cattolica Darsena, constructed in 2007, is located at the southern portion of the profile. Potential for eutrophication due to the nearby Torrente Tavollo mouth. No cyanobacterial eutrophication events have been recorded in the past four years. No phytoplankton bloom events (Raphidophyceae Fibrocapsa japonica) were reported during 2015–2018. No macroalgae bloom events were reported during 2015–2018.
